How to use this calculator

Open your course syllabus and find the grading breakdown — most online courses list category weights like homework 20%, discussions 15%, quizzes 20%, midterm 20%, final 25%. Enter each category you have grades for, with its weight and your average score from your LMS gradebook (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and Brightspace all show category averages).

The calculator weights each category correctly even when only part of the course is graded, so you can check your standing in week 4 or week 14. Then set the final exam weight and your target course grade to see the exact score you need. An answer above 100% means the target is mathematically out of reach through the final alone — worth knowing before you spend a week studying for an outcome that cannot happen.

If the number the calculator shows you is not realistic, you still have options: many syllabi include extra credit or replace-lowest policies, most professors respond to early honest conversations — and if the whole class has gone sideways, our failing class rescue service exists for exactly that situation.

Grade calculator FAQ

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Multiply each category grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight used. For example, 85% on homework worth 20% contributes 17 points toward your course grade.

What grade do I need on my final to pass?

Enter your current grades and the final exam weight above. The calculator solves: (target − current × remaining weight) ÷ final weight. If the answer is above 100%, the target is not reachable through the final alone.

My syllabus drops the lowest quiz. How do I account for that?

Enter your quiz average excluding the lowest score. If the drop has not happened yet, calculate both ways to see your realistic range.

Is this calculator free?

Yes — completely free, no signup, no email required. Bookmark it and share it with classmates.
